Fiction Friday: Chapter 8

Well folks, the summer is winding down.  I'm not sure where the past few weeks went, but I'm pretty sure all of July was on fast forward. School is a mere 16 days away!! AND I haven't even stepped inside my classroom once! Ahhhh!!

Why yes...yes... I am starting to panic!

The good news is that I can start going up to school on Monday.  My first step is to paint the walls. I'm not looking forward to this task, but it needs to be done.    Check back next week for pictures of the before, during, and after.  There is so much to do and so little time.

Until then, let's continue our celebration of books with Fiction Friday.  I have absolutely loved hosting this linky party all summer.  I have learned about so many great new books.  My Amazon wishlist is stocked piled with great new reads.

If you missed weeks past, go to my Fiction Friday page.  From there you can click on a book that you are interested in to go directly to my post and then scroll down to find the other fabulous bloggers that linked up that week.

This week I read...
Benjamin Franklinstein Lives!
by Matthew McElligott and Larry Tuxbury

Victor Godwin is a science genius. He's devoted, hard-working, and follows all the rules when conducting an experiment.  However, the last thing Victor ever thought he would discover is Benjamin Franklin, alive and well and running on pure electricity.   And the kicker?  When Ben gets too much energy he turns into a monster.  Victor has to use all his scientific knowledge and find his true inner inventor to keep Franklin under control and win the science fair.

Benjamin Franklinstein Lives! is a fun and quirky book that is bound to appeal to all upper elementary students.  I can see this being very popular in my classroom this year because it is unique.  The chapters are very short and keep the reader engaged.  Plus, there is a mixture of diagrams and pictures that relate to science, the story, or both throughout the book including a model of a baking soda volcano and a Philadelphia cheesesteak sandwich. As you can see, the authors had a lot of fun putting this book together.  It will appeal to even the most reluctant readers and get kids excited about science, history, and inventing.

Great book for all intermediate grades with a great tagline... "Ben Franklin discovered electricity.  Now he runs on it."  Who doesn't want to read about that?!?

This book is also a 2012-2013 Bluebonnet Award nominee.

Link up and join Fiction Friday before summer runs out.  I would love to hear your thoughts, reviews, and/or lesson ideas connected with books you love and/or have read recently.

Please don't forget to grab my Fiction Friday button and link back to this post, so everyone can join in the fun!

Happy Reading!!
