Art + Math = Fractional Me

I love integrating art into my classroom whenever possible.  This year, I was introduced to a great project by my 4th grade team.  It's called Fractional Me.

Fractional Me is a portrait created out of small squares. (I taught a few students to use the di-cut machine and they just went to town.)  Students are only allowed to use whole and half squares for ease of counting later on. They construct their portrait and are then responsible for determining the fractional amounts of squares for each color.  They turn out really cute and with so much personality. We added googly eyes just to make them more fun.

Don't you just love the belt in the last picture?

  9. I teach 5th grade. I would love to do this but I am trying to think how I can "ramp" it up to make it higher order for this grade level! I love this. I just found something like this for area and permiter where they draw robots and have to figure out the area and permiter of the total drawing. :) Fun stuff for hands on learning!

  10. OK - since most of your posts were in April, I feel a little late, but I am joining the bandwagon. This is is stinkin' cute and perfect for me third graders. I am SO STOKED about using this as a concluding activity for our fraction study. Now if I just figure out how to show your class's examples to my kiddos.....

  14. This is so cute! We just started our fraction unit and I am going to get this in. :) Was the background paper 1/2 of a full size construction paper? Any stipulations on how many colors they had to use, or did you just let them go? Excited to try this, so any helpful tips would be great. :) Thank you!!
